2023 has been a year of groundbreaking wins: Seattle became the first major U.S. city to add caste as a protected category. California’s state legislature proposed a bill to officially ban discrimination based on caste. And while opponents to caste equity continue to flood the discourse with vitriol and misdirection, activists like Thenmozhi Soundararajan and Equality Labs continue to fight for liberation, justice, and civil rights.

“This month, as we dig even deeper into our historical legacies as caste-oppressed people, free ourselves from systems of domination, and commit to the freedom of all, we want to remember the caste abolitionist ancestors who have boldly come before us and continue to inform our advocacy work,” says Soundararajan. Click here to see Equality Lab’s poster and read up on some of these caste abolitionist ancestors.
